Taking the British Gas app from 2 to 4.3 stars

The BG Energy app is used by almost 2 million British Gas customers to help manage their accounts.

The app team were tasked with a redesign of the BG Energy app at the end of 2023. At the time, the app had an average rating of 2.1 (out of five) in the App Store.

We took the opportunity to not only redesign the app itself, but redesign the entire design process.

The challenge

The goal was to streamline the design-to-development process, reduce screen duplication, and create a new design system on Figma using tokens and variables. Additionally, the aim was to improve the British Gas app experience for customers.

The outcome would be a faster, more consistent workflow, improved design, quicker development, and better app store reviews.

Discovery

A full audit was completed on the existing app design to identify screen duplication and component inconsistencies.

We then ran an in person session with the team to agree an approach to:

  1. designing components
  2. token naming and structure
  3. preparing a user journey
  4. what a developer handover should look like
  5. what will be included in the guideline documents
  6. agree an order for the new screen designs

Design system strategy

Accessibility, scalability, flexibility and consistency, were the main guiding principles for the new design system.

We used a modular approach, whereby everything was broken down into reusable components and patterns (eg. buttons, forms, icons, typography etc).

Variables for colour, spacing, and typography were utilised to ensure consistency in the designs. A json file could be exported and used by the developers. This made sure the designs were an exact match in the code.

Results and impact

British Gas app on the App Store

The new version of the British Gas app was launched mid 2024. The new design system has not only improved our workflow, but we're now able to deliver features that customers want, more quickly, and with higher quality.

Within a few weeks of launching (summer 2024), the app's rating saw an increase from 2.1 stars to 4.3 stars on The App Store.
